Ep. 84 – Why You Need Independence for Growth

Why You Need Independence for Growth

This week, I bring you into a conversation that I had with one of my amazing clients in the Success Society, which was about the need for independence to grow. This amazing member was experiencing a few circumstances happening at home that were preventing her from going back to school and moving back to campus on time. Not only was she delayed in moving, she was also feeling alone and isolated while starting these new processes at the beginning of her semester because her partner was doing his co-op in a different city. Ultimately, after working through these feelings of nervousness and stress together, this member made some important realizations about the importance of guilt-free independence in order to grow and flourish while pursuing one’s own advancement – listen to this episode to learn more!

Insights on Growing Independently, Without Guilt or Shame

So many of us rely on our relationships with people for comfort, and this is completely natural. But we cannot rely on the presence of another person so heavily that we revolve our entire schedules, strategies, and social time around what we think is convenient for the other person. There are ways that we can grow independently while also maintaining our cherished relationships with others. Here are some key takeaways from this episode:

  • When we are implementing new skills and strategies to improve our productivity, grades, study habits, and further our advancement in general, we need to put ourselves first when it comes to making decisions that help us pursue our next best steps.
  • Doing things independently and when you want to does not make you selfish. Instead, this makes you appropriately focused on your own growth and success.
  • Just because you and another person, whether it be your partner, friend, or family member, are not together doesn’t mean you’re growing apart. It means that you might be growing together in parallel, with the appropriate independence that you need in order to make decisions for yourself, unencumbered by the decisions or expectations of others.
  • Remember, if they are the right person or people, they will support you in your independent growth and grow alongside you.
