Ep. 13 – Professional Applications with Peter Bass

In this week’s episode, we welcome Peter Bass to the podcast! Peter is an amazing client of mine who is completing a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Toronto and has been working on his applications for university professor positions. Peter has 14 years of experience working in the classical music field and has performed all over Canada, the US, Germany, and Italy. He also runs his own voice studio, “PB&J Music Studio,” with his wife, Jess, where they teach singing in all genres for all ages. (Fun fact: I’m also a student there studying classical opera technique!)

Peter Bass has a long-standing relationship with the voice. The voice is the most direct way to communicate and knowing how to use it lets people know who you are. More importantly, however, it lets us understand who we are, what our true sound is, and what we truly want to say. Along with his busy private voice studio, PB & J Music Studio, Peter is currently attending the University of Toronto in pursuit of a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree. His research is focuses on the physical manifestations of emotions in performing singers. By understanding that physical sensations are correlated to emotions instills an understanding of who we are as individuals. This, along with a solid, action-based singing technique, creates opportunities to communicate not only with audiences, but also with ourselves.

Peter has almost twenty years of performing experience. He has performed across Canada, in the US, Germany, and Italy. He is experienced in opera, classical, jazz, and music theatre. His vast experience is based on what he teaches and studies: we are all individual, human beings. When our voices, both spoken and sung, are grounded within our bodies, there is great freedom. We can’t be larger than our selves, but we can be larger than we ever imagined.

Peter discusses his experience working with us at Apply Yourself, during which he prepared strong applications for his professorial positions at university institutions. He also discusses his academic and professional journey along with his current doctoral research. Peter shares how his experiences inform his personal and professional identities as a student, a doctoral candidate, and as a musical performer. He provides insights into his teaching philosophy and how his years of experience as a music teacher helped him to hone his skill-set and produce an application package that is unique to him.
